what are those creamy-white kernals you sometimes cough up out of your throat?
I need to know this, what are those awful little kernals called?Where are they from? They come out of nowhere now and then and are not food related. Are they also the same thing you see in some old people's mouths when they are constantly chewing--not food or gum but also off white and chunky?

Q: I have these small white smelly and hard spots in the back of my throat. I have to wait until they get big and fall out or I pick at them to get them out of my throat. I have tried to gargle to no avail. This is bad for my breath and it bothers me tremendously.
A: The condition you have is called cryptic tonsil debris. This is caused by crevices in the surface of the tonsils (crypts) that collect food debris, bacteria, and the shed outer lining of the tonsil. The treatment for this includes: water pik to flush the debris out of the crevices or manually removing the debris with forceps or a Q-tip. If the problem is persistent and significantly bothersome then the only "cure" is a tonsillectomy.

They're called tonsil stones or tonsilloliths. Since they're thought to be made by the anaerobic bacteria that lives naturally in your mouth, you might try gargling with a mixture of hydrogren peroxide and water.

About 1/4 of adults w/ tonsils get these so they're very, very common. But they aren't linked to any known disease and they don't seem to indicated any serious health condition. They also don't seem to be related to how well you brush.

Be really, realy careful when trying to remove them. Your gag reflex makes it perfectly possible to swallow a cotton swab or even a toothbrush. ;-)
