I sleep with my mouth open, i wake up every morning with swollen gums.?
I wake up every morning with the back of my gums swollen. Have any idea why? I know your going to say go to the dentist. It's hard when you lost your job and have bills pilling up. I was just wondering if anyone knows why so i can try to kill the pain alittle. Thanks *StarLite* FYI: I do smoke, and when i was little i fell down the stairs and ever since then i can't breath through my nose.

Sleeping with your mouth open is very bad for both your teeth and gums. Without the saliva that normally helps to keep harmful bacteria in check, they run rampant throughout the night, especially on the plaque buildup near the gum-line. The bacterial-plaque interaction produces an acid that can eat through the enamel of your teeth and irritate your gums, possibly leading to/worsening gingivitis. A couple of things you can do: 1) Get some breathe-right nose strips to open up the air flow through your nostrils, reducing your reliance on breathing through your mouth. 2)Walgreen's and Eckerds carry a mouthwash for people that don't produce enough saliva naturally (especially people undergoing cancer treatment). Use it every night before bed and as soon as you wake up. 3) Get a Waterpik dental hygiene system ($39.95-$59.95) and use it before brushing in the morning and at night. It will literally "blast" the plaque that has built up along the gum-line and irrigate your gums. Plus, it completely takes away the need to floss if used correctly. I used this, and I noticed my gums got MUCH healthier in only three days. Hopes this helps

Sleeping with your mouth open will make your gums very dry that's why smoking also causes inflamation of the gums because the inhalation of air combined. However, if you flossing and brushing twice per day, than you shouldn't have pain even if you sleep with your mouth open.
