What is the difference between a Mucolytic and expectorant agents or are they the same?

Although they have similar actions they are not the same. An expectorant is usually given to help loosen a congested cough in order to make the cough more productive. It acts by moistening the respiratory tract in order to make the mucous less tenacious. A mucolytic acts differently as it attacks the protein bonds of the mucous. This is helpful if someone has a very weak or nonproductive cough. The mucous basically turns into a watery fluid and can either be coughed/suctioned out or is simply absorbed by the body. Indirect action vs direct action. Similar results but, different routes.
