They do not contribute to poverty. If you have HIV/AIDS and don't have medical care - you are up the creek without a paddle.
If you have medical care - then you can afford some treament.
Plenty of rich people get HIV and AIDS - it's about participating in those risky behaviours that spread it - not about economics.

HIV/AIDS is very prevalent in the African American community. They make up about 60% of new infections while only constituting 13% of the population. African Americans also have the highest rates of poverty, so maybe you are equating these two facts. A person is probably more likely to engage in risky behavior if they are in poverty and have a lower education level. Treating HIV/AIDS is definitely difficult to do if you are in poverty. For obvious reasons, it's expensive!

Well, it could be if the person doesn't have money or sources to get a condom, OR indeed to get the education they need. Think of all the people in Africa who have it. I bet education and sources are passing them by.
