Try this:

1 cup of red wine.
2 tablespoons of honey
2 cloves

Warm the wine (tea or coffee temp. OK), add the honey and the cloves and drink just before going to bed. In sips.

It's an opera singer remedy or so I was told. Has worked for me everytime although I can't sing a note.

honey lemon and hot water does help.
but it is going around and lots of people have this at the moment.
so many coughs and flu's and colds going and the weather is so unreal.

Well, it's either a cold, which is three days coming, three days with you and three days going, whether you like it or not, or he has some other infection. Time to try the doctor?

(I'd agree with Miami Lilly, too, lots of vitamin C in the shape of oranges etc seems to help me fight these things off better than all the over-the-counter stuff. It's what an ancient and long-retired GP told me once, and it seems to be right.)

So whats the question?

85% of all sore throats are viral. If a cough is also present it further supports a viral diagnosis and is against bacterial infection. Vicks and Buckley’s are useless for any condition anyway!

Assuming that the problem is viral, it will be self limiting, with no activity or medication affecting its duration. He should take plenty of fluids and regular paracetamol. Avoid gargling with salt, which is dangerous and aspirin which is irritant. Unnecessary and excessive vitamins are quite worthless. Over the counter throat sprays such as Diflamm or Chloraseptic may help soothe the throat.

We've been having the same problem in our home. Everyone has had this dry, hacking cough for over a week now. I seem to be getting rid of it faster than anyone else. The only thing I'm doing differently is taking large doses of vitamin C. Sometimes, when all the over-the counter drugs fail, the best thing to do is fight it naturally. Start taking eating foods high in anti-oxidants.

I'm using a vitamin C supplement called Emergen-C. It's 1000 mg. And getting 8 hours of sleep nightly.
