I had a bad chest. When nothing helped, I took Mucinex. The same chemicals (Guaifebesin) are found in brands Costco and Sam's at a fraction of the cost.
Later I took those. We need to take with a glass of water. I always take a whole glass of lukewarm water.

I never take cold water this time and also as a prevention all Winter.

Another thing that helps me is a concoction.
I heat a pan of water with fresh ginger 1" grated, some black peppercorns (7), 2 cloves, about 10-15 leaves of Indian Basil, a tiny piece of cinnamon, and 5 pounded almonds .

Bring it to boil and simmer till it reduces in half. Strain and store. (I do not strain, but let almonds into the stored liquid)
Take half a cup at a time and warm it and sip it like tea. Add honey to make it smooth. It will act better than any cough syrup. Soothes and flushes out phlegm if any. Or just soothes dry cough.
Cough vanishes.

It has helped many.

Viruses this winter are lasting a long time. You can increase your water intake - this thins the secretions and helps to decrease the coughing; run a humidifier in the bedroom where you sleep; consider taking some Mucinex. You can continue with the Robitussin. It will eventually go away.

Since you cannot afford a doctor, try my mom's old fashioned home remedy: It works.

(1) You need 2 cloves of garlic, 1 ounce of olive oil, place the peeled cloves of garlic in a small pot or skillet on low heat. Saute/fry it for about 5 minutes until the garlic turns dark. Remove it from the heat and allow the oil to cool. drink 2 teaspoons of the oil every 4 hours. It will break up the mucus and you will get relief from the cough.

(2) To soothe your throat, sip on honey and lemon juice in warm water.

(3) If you can find oil of Eucalyptus, in a small pot, bring the water to a boil. 2-4 drops of the eucalyptus in the hot water and inhale the vapors for a few minutes. It will also soothe your throat and open your airways. The eucalyptus is also the main ingredient in Vicks Vaporub, which is another option.

You can get an inhaler from your GP to help open up your air passages. It could be something more serious than a cold, so you should get it checked out.
