Do anybody know anybody that has COPD (emphysema)?
My uncle, who was always the dad I never had, was just diagnosed with COPD and after reading a fact sheet, I'm still now sure how serious it really is. If anybody has any information on whether or not my uncle will be okay, please, please respond.

Thank you.

Jason, I am 63 and have COPD. I manage quite well, actually, and don't intend to die for a long time. Surely, it matters how badly one has it, of course.

COPD is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. People survive many years, it is managable but it does progress. Find a good pulmonologist, that is the key to helping your uncle. Research treatment options with him.

Yes, I have severe emphysema. I'm on oxygen 24/7 and only get out of the house to go to the doctor. I take steroids that cause cataracts and osteoporosis, but that beats not breathing.

Uncle must quit smoking NOW. Not tomorrow, not someday. NOW. I waited too long. If he quits, he will stop doing further damage.

my mom has had it for many years she never smoked, my gram had it for 20 years that i know of, my sister has had it so far 5 years and i think i might have it. it can be controlled very well, later on it will make your mobility harder and require oxygen but don't smoke, stay active as much as you can, lose weight if needed and eat healthy, and watch what types of chemicals you in hale including cleaning stuff, some powders, perfumes he should be around for a long time.
