Can you get pulminary fibrosis by taking steroids for some forms of artritis?

IDIOPATHIC PULMONARY FIBROSIS (IPF)

When all known causes of interstitial lung disease have been ruled out, the condition is called "idiopathic" (of unknown origin) pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

There are several theories as to what may cause IPF; including viral illness and allergic or environmental exposure (including tobacco smoke). These theories are still being researched. Bacteria and other microorganisms are not thought to be the cause of IPF.

There is also a familial form of the disease, known as familial idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Additional research is being done to determine whether there is a genetic tendency to develop the disease, as well as to determine other causes of IPF.

No. Steroids have many side affects that is not one of them.

actually when u have arthritis it causes a fibrosis like process in the lungs... if that is what you are wondering...

Not likely. It is more likely that the pulmonary fibrosis is part of the underlying vasculitis condition.

Drug induced IPF
Antibiotics
Chemotherapeutic drugs
Antiarrhythmic drugs
Some drugs that can cause pulmonary fibrosis
Certain strong medicines may have the undesirable side effect of causing pulmonary fibrosis. Some of them are:

nitiofurantoin (sometimes used for urinary tract infections)
amiodarone (sometimes prescribed for an irregular heart rate)
bleomycin, Hydroxyurea, cyclophosphamide, and methotrexate (sometimes prescribed to fight cancer)

Also don't take "stantain", or any chlorestoral lowering drugs if you have IPF, it may cause chlost. to raise.

It is not likely that the steroids would cause the pulmonary fibrosis, but certain types of arthritis are linked to interstitial lung diseases/pulmonary fibrosis. ILD's begin with some injury to the lungs which causes an inflammatory reaction. The cause of the injury is usually unknown, but from what I understand (I'm just a Mom, not an expert), in a person with ILD, it is an altered immune response (which people with arthritis usually have) which causes the fibrosis. The steroids actually are used to treat the inflammation in the lungs, so if anything, they would help breathing although not necessarily the fibrosis. My daughter was born healthy but developed an ILD at 2 weeks of age, and she has taken high doses of steroids since then for treatment.
