For the most part they are the same.... However a psychologist is able to prescribe drugs....(that is the major difference) You can see either, but a psychologist will refer you to a psychiatrist if they feel you need medication prescribed. Hope that helps.....

a psychologist and pychiatrist are basically the same but a psychiatrist can diagnose and prescribe medication.

A psychologist studies individuals in society. A psychiatrist works with individuals who have issues.

One deals with the workings of the mind and the other one deals with a mind thats not working!

a psychiatrist deals with the branch of medicine concerned with mental or behavioral disorders and a psychologist deals with the study of the mind and the characteristic mental makeup of a person or group

A psychiatrist a doctor, finished school just like any other MD. A psychologist is a therapist, they do not go to medical school like MD's.

psychiatrists can prescribe medications, diagnos mental illnesses and offer counseling. They must go to medical school, complete a four year residency at a hospital before becoming one
psychologists can not prescribe medications and most counsel at schools

bouncer bobtail
BOTH can prescribe medicine if they are appropriately qualified in the U.K. Psychologists are often also CPN's.

A psychiatrist looks a the psyche of the brain from the point of brain chemistry and structure. A psychologist is interested in what is stored in the brain, such as memories and learnt behaviour.

In computing terms.
A psychiatrist is a hardware engineer
A psychologist is a software engineer

1 psychiatrist-workings of the mind/2 psychologist-how the mind works,eg one is for solving the affects of the mind two is about where in the brain it originates from what part this is a bloody good question i hope i have helped at least a little

A psychiatrist is a doctor (MD) and can prescribe medicine. A psychologist is a therapist and cannot prescribe medicine.

A psychiatrist is a medically qualified doctor whilst a psychologist will usually hold a PhD. The important difference is that a psychiatrist can prescribe medication and particularly for the more 'extreme' mental illnesses.

me_myself_&_eye
A psychiatrist is an MD, a psychologist is a PhD

I shall explain to you in a layman's term.
A psychiatrist study about sick mind.
A psychologist study about healthy mind.
Criminals show go to Psychiatrist for treatment.
Athlete or Actor should approach a psychologist for better performance. Hope is easy to understand.

psychiatrists are md's and they now treat your complaints with pills. the don't like talking. they lose money. they like you to see the psychologist or social worker specialist (essentially a psycologist, too). they talk and talk and generally advise you to stop behaving the way you are behaving. they want to help you. i have been in and out since shrinks (psychiatrists) used fraudian or jungian technigues. couch analysis and such. now they have give up on all that and have generally denounced those once great gurus. now they believe in brain chemistry. the pychologists believe in categorizing and persuading you to quit drinking and pilling and sleeping around. or whatever you deal is. does it usually work?

Tabatha
A psychiatrist can prescribe meds. Apart from that, they are pretty much the same.

CampyGoddess
I go to both, my psychiatrist prescribes my meds, and my psycologist sits there with me for an hour for a "talk therapy" session.

I hate talk therapy.

hmmcfalls
A psychiatrist is able to prescribe medicine, a psychologist isn't. A psychiatrist is actually an MD.

I agree with Amy P. Shes right on. I see a psyciatrist off and on, and he does prescribe me meds.

A psychiatrist merely treats mental conditions whereas a psychologist studies mental conditions Plus there's also the old joke of 'about £30 an hour'.

A psychologist is any person who studies psychology at pretty much any level.

A psychiatrist is a person who is qualified to diagnose and treat psychological issues/disorders.

(So a good psychiatrist will continue to be a psychologist, also, as they will continue their studies after qualification).

RACHEL D
A psychiatrist is a doctor.

Tom B
a psychiatrist is a medical doctor and can prescribe psychiatric medications. a psychologist does not have an MD and conducts other types of therapy such as talk therapy. a clinical psychologist usually holds a Ph.D. or Psy.D.

Bronwen
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in how the brain functions by understanding the biology of the human body and brain. He or she may or may not specialize in therapy. Because they are medical doctors, psychiatrists are allowed to prescribe psychoactive medications (along with other medications, if they see fit) to help a patient who has a mental illness. Their approach and training allows them to diagnose from a physical standpoint--they understand the chemical and physical processes which create mental problems in a person.

A psychologist is not a medical doctor. He or she may continue their education and get a PhD, and the title of "Doctor", but they are not a medical doctor, and do not have the power to prescribe medications to help patients. Their approach to understanding medical problems which affect the brain is based on their education, which focuses on behaviors and other triggers, such as the way a person was raised. Like psychiatrists, they may or may not do actual talk therapy, but those who do go through intensive training to learn about the mental processes which cause mental illness, rather than the physical processes.

Now that there are so many medications to help with chemical imbalances in the brain, many psychologists prefer to work in a practice where there is a psychiatrist or other medical doctor who can prescribe medications in their stead for their patients.

All things being equal, patients tend to choose a mental health provider based on their individual needs. Psychiatrists generally know more about how the brain and body operate to affect a person's behavior or mental state, while a psychologist knows more about how thought patterns and behavioral aspects affect a person's behavior or mental state. They are basically complimentary professions, with some areas of overlap, but the one specializes in biology, while the other specializes in behaviors.

I hope that helps explain it a bit.

A psychiatrist is also a doctor who can diagnose and prescribe medicines. A psychologist is more interested in your psyche and the way your mind works, and will work with someone over a period of time.

I believe the difference is basically that a psychiatrist can write prescriptions for medication and a psychologist cannot. I may be wrong about this, but I thought I would answer anyway. Also, a psychiatrist has a medical degree, and a psychologist may have only a bachelor's or a master's degree. Hope that helps.
