Is there a difference between a "fractured bone" and a "broken bone"? Or can they be used synonymously?
Please list reference... Thanks a bunch.

A fractured bone is a bone with small splits that resemble lightening when it comes from the sky. To get an idea of what they look like a bit better u can make your hand into a fist and where your thumb and pointer finger curl is what something fractured resembles. A broken bone is bone that has broken away from itself and needs to be reset or rebroken so that it might fit back together properly. Try snapping a breadstick in 2..the crunchy kind..that is what a break resembles..Hope this helps

I am a medical assistant and a nurse aid, so i have some experience in this. fractured means not broken all the way through. broken means completely broken all the way through the bone. good luck and god bless!

They mean the same thing. There is no difference. My son broke his femur in half. All the hospital & Dr's reports say " Fractured Femur"
As far as having a crack or a break halfway through the bone, they are all fractures, just different types.

fractured is the correct term. two halves of a fractured bone can be completely separated and jutting through your skin, it's still a fracture.

Rene B
Yes, you can use them interchangeably. Fracture is the medical term. Broken is for the laymen.

Fracture is the term that medical people use. It is defined as a break in the bone. It does not have to be completely broken in half or be sticking out through the skin. There are many, many types of fractures. They can be anything from hairline cracks to open traumatic fractures with jagged edges of the bone sticking out of the skin.
Common people usually use the term "broken bone" but they both mean the same thing.
