A little trick to tell if your ankle is broken.
I guess right most of the time...
Lots of pain and swelling usually =sprain
Pain with black and blue around ankle and nausea usually =fracture
A sprain generally hurts more than a break because when you break something your body releases endorphines to help ease the pain, this can also make you nauseated.
X-ray is the sure way to tell.

If you really don't want to go to the ER, which it sounds like you probably will, you can research they symptoms online or on webmd.com. But, I think you would KNOW if it was broken because the pain would be unbearable, and your ankle would be very swollen. None-the-less, I would ice it, and probably head to ER or Urgent Care to make sure it's not sprained or anything else like that.

RICE. Rest, ice, compression with an ace wrap, and elevate the leg above your heart
as long as your toes are pink, have sensation, and are moving there is no reason to go to the ER.
Signs of a break.
1) inability to bear weight on the leg
2) tenderness that is most severe over the bone
3) crunching sound with movement
Signs of a sprain
1) tenderness just below the ankle bone
2) you can stand perfectly still on the leg and it will hold your weight
I would follow the advice above. You have 10 -14 days even if surgery is necessary. Don't waste your time in the ER go to the orthopedic surgeons office directly on Tuesday.
If you have to ask if it is broken odds are it is a sprain and if it is broken it may be treated with a cast.
