My daughter has already had chickenpox about a year ago and now there's another outbreak of chickenpox in the school and she has got a few spots around her face and one or two on her body that do look like chickenpox but I was told that you can only get them once. I am really worried as I am pregnant and heard it was dangerous to be in contact with chickenpox.

Once is the limit. If you believe that she has it again then I strongly suggest you bring your daughter to the Doctor. It may be a start of other diseases. Good Luck! |

I don't think so, but call and ask your doctor anyway. If nothing else, it will give you some peace of mind. |

yes, the second round of chicken pox is called shingles. You get shingles later on in life. If she had them last year, chances are she won't get them again for years. |

Go to the doctor immediately, both of you. You can only get it once, but what if that wasn't what is was the first time? And any kind of outbreak could be dangerous to your baby. Real chicken pox only comes once, but after that you can get shingles. It is a painful rash. Don't waste time taking both of you to the doc. |

if your chickenpox were not that severe the first time, you can actually catch chickenpox a 2nd time |

yeah but it is very rare. the only way to get it twice is if you had a mild case the first time around. |

Yes. One attack does not give lifelong immunity. As for your own immunity, get your anti varicella antibodies titre checked. |

Yes. It's called shingles which is a reactivation of dormant varicella-zoster virus. It is farely rare but does happen. |

DAN REVERE hit the nail on the head!! The number of overly-confident WRONG answers is really quite amusing. I know all of you loved your parent's and/or grandparent's...but that doesn't make the superstitions and myths they passed on to you growing up medically sound. While we're on the subject... drinking coffee will NOT sober you up when drunk...putting a steak on a black eye only serves to ruin good meat...cracking your knuckles does NOT cause arthritis....and...oh yea, the moon isn't made of cheese! |

yes but its quite rare I wouldnt worry too much |

It is extremely rare that they do because the body normally builds up its immunity to chickenpox after the first time. |

Possible but very rare. |

Yes!!!! This happened to me!! I had a full blown case as a little kid,and when my little daughter got them,(I was 30),I got them and was in Very Bad Shape with 110 fever and out brakes in and on my hole body!!! Doctor advised me that there are cases of having it twice. 1)If you didn't get a full case the first time. 2)Some people don't develop an imunity to it and can get it over and over. First poster is full of "Bull"! |

Yes, but it doesn't happen very often. Usually you only get chickenpox once but later in life you can get shingles. Chicken pox is a form of the herpes virus and once you had chicken pox the virus lays dorment in your body then later durning high levels of stress or when your immune system is weak it resurfaces as shingles. Not everyone that has chicken pox gets shingles later on its usually the people with the more severe cases of chicken pox that gets it. Usually people get shingles after age 40 but it can happen at any age. I would take her to the Dr. he can tell you if it is a rare case of chicken pox the second time around. It is dangerous to be around someone with chicken pox or shingles while pregnant so ask you Dr. what precautions you should take. |

I have heard of people getting chicken pox twice(or even 3 times), but hear that their cases are less severe than those who only get it once. So I would call your doctor just in case. |

Yes, it doesn't happen often, but because the virus is always in your body it is possible...be careful and have your child checked out just in case. |

Yes u can. If the first outbreak she did not have more than 30 spots on her she did not have the full effect of the virus. Went through this with both my sons. They had been around people that had them and only got about 10 then the third time they had it full force. |

If you only broke out a little bit the first time, you can get them a second time. I had them when I was younger and on my stomach when I was 19. Let your Obstetrician know about you possibly being exposed to chickenpox. |

Yes you can get them twice. I did |

Yes, children can absolutely get chicken pox twice, particularly if the first time around was relatively minor. It IS dangerous for you to be around chickenpox. Are you vaccinated or have you had the pox? |

YES, I did and so did my brother. First time I was a 4yo, second I was 15yo. It is more common than people think. btw we are both very healthy then and now (no immune issues). Talk to your doctor. Good luck Wow, I can't believe so many people would answer a question this important not only WRONG but with such conviction! :( PLEASE, call your doctor. My health insurance card (aetna) has an "ask a nurse hotline". If you have something similar perhaps you could call them. |

A kid can get chickenpox a second time, but it's very rare. It's more common that the first illness was something other than chicken pox, and was misdiagnosed. The odds are good that you, as an adult, are immune because you had it when you were younger, or got a vaccination, so there's no need to worry. Up to 95 percent of adults in the United States are immune, including many people who had chicken pox and never even knew it. If you got the chicken pox vaccine (available in the United States since 1995), you're probably immune — it works for more than 80 percent of those who get it. If you're not sure whether you're immune, a simple blood test can give you the answer. If you're not immune and you do happen to catch chicken pox while you're pregnant, there's a chance that it will affect your baby and that you could get quite sick. |
