Plz tell me what is Angiogram and Angioplasty.Whats da difference between them?
plz tell me what is Angiogram and Angioplasty.Whats da difference between them? A doctor said 2 a person that he need to take angiogram and if possible he needs an operation of angioplasty.
First of all why angioplasty is required??
ANd how is its efficiency? and its results??
And how much it costs ?? and what is da success %??
Plz tell me frends.its very urgent information 2 me.
Angiogram is a procedure for visualizing various blood vessels any where in the body. Coronary angiogram is with specific reference to the blood vessels of the heart.
The angiogram tells what, if anything, is wrong. Angioplasty refers to repair of the blood vessel. In medicine the termination plasty refers to repair(Angioplasty, valvuloplasty, etc..) rather than to replacement.
If you are referring to Coronary angioplasty: there are many options.
in balloon angioplasty a slender tube with a balloon is introduced into the coronary and located by x-ray with the balloon straddling the block.. The balloon is inflated with high pressure saline, held for a while and deflated and with drawn .
The artery is expanded at the site. Nothing further is done.
The problem with this procedure is that while it is cheap, long term success for large blocks is poor. Re occlusion(closing up of the opening) happens often, requiring a more detailed (and more expensive) procedure is needed.
The next higher level option is stenting. In this a small perforated metal tube is inserted at the site of block, expanded using the balloon as described before, and the balloon withdrawn after deflating, leaving the expanded metal tube behind. This is more expensive and has better success. Even this re occludes fairly often. At the highest end(costliest also) are drug eluting stents. These stents have a special coating of a drug, which slowly releases into the blood preventing re blocking.
This is not totally problem free. The jury is still out on drug eluting stents.
All these procedures are done by the interventional cardiologist and not a cardiac surgeon.
Long term results seem to be still infavour of CABG(coronary artery bypass grafting) commonly called bypass surgery done by a cardiac surgeon.
These are general observations. Only a competent specialty clinic can give specific advice for each based on a detailed assessment.

Angiogram is a diagnostic procedure using a DYE to know where exactly is the blood supply to the heart is blocked!
angioplasty is a therapeutic procedure where using a baloon-like stent they open the blocked area that has been diagnosed with angiogram!
it will cost u around 1-2.5 lakhs depending on the number of vessels involved
success rate85-90%
results r good

Angiogram is a method of investigating by taking pictures after injecting a dye to see the circulation of the heart blood supply and to check for any block in the circulation to the heart muscle itelf, it is done in a cathlab underlocal anasthesia,/angioplsty is an extention of angiography, identifying a block and displacing it to clear the pasage for freeflow of blood to the heart. This procedure in itself may or may not be sufficient so a stent may have to be installed to prevent further obstruction, these procedure are quite safe affective and are expensive, but a stich in time saves nine.

An angiogram is simply an x-ray image of blood vessels after they are filled with a contrast material. A coronary angiogram is the "gold standard" for the evaluation of coronary artery disease (CAD). A coronary angiogram can be used to identify the exact location and severity of CAD.
Angioplasty :
The surgical repair of a blood vessel, either by inserting a balloon-tipped catheter to unblock it, or by reconstructing or replacing part of the vessel.
Purpose:
An angioplasty is done to reopen a partially blocked blood vessel so that blood can flow through it again at a normal rate. In patients with an occlusive vascular disease such as atherosclerosis, the flow of blood to other organs or remote parts of the body is limited by the narrowing of the vessel's lumen due to fatty deposits or patches known as plaque. Once the vessel has been widened, an adequate blood flow is restored. The vessel may narrow again over time at the same location, however, and the procedure may need to be repeated.
The average costs for cardiac ailments/ procedures are in the range of Rs. 15,000-20,000 for angiography and upward of Rs 2,00,000 for angioplasty, with CABG (coronary angio bypass graft) costing upward of Rs 3,50,000.

Coronary Angiogram is just a 15 minutes procedure conducted in Cathlab, just to know whether any block is there in the coronary arteries.
After Coronary Angiogram, (if block is there in the heart) Cardiologist will come to a conclusion to decide about : - 1) Medicational Therapy 2) Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting surgery (Open heart surgery) 3) Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)
1) Medicational therapy means, the blocks of the arteries will cure by taking medicines.
2) Open Heart surgery (CABG) means, Cardiac Surgeon will perform the operation of opening the heart
3) Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) means, without opening the heart, Cardiologist will perform the procedure in Cathlab of stenting the heart
The lifeline for both Angioplasty and CABG will be 10-15 years.
CABG will cost Rs.1 Lakh and Angioplasty will cost Rs.1 Lakh to 3 Lakh
