No. They need you to sign a form allowing them.

famohio
There is a very strict privacy act that protectsx us. If you haven't signed off on it to grant permission then they should not exchange info.

No, they need patient's consent. There is something called patient/doctor confidentiality which means that the doctor can't talk about the patient with anyone else.

PJ
Doctors can consult on a patient's condition with other doctors without the patient's permission, but they cannot release info to just anyone without your permission. Consulting with another physician isn't the same as releasing your medical info to other people.

blossom18
no they can consult with other doctors without your permission

blahblahblahblahblah
I'm pretty sure that doctor patient relationship refers to all doctors. Unless you have specifically asked them not to discuss it with anyone else. They may need a second opinion from another doctor or if they know the patient visited them as well they may need to compare notes. Some people go to 2 different doctors to get pains meds and the doctors catch on.

In the US physicians are governed mostly by ethics and not by law. If a doctor feels that it is in the best interest for the health of his patient to consult with another doctor there is nothing to prevent that from happening. It is at the doctors desecration.

The American Medical Association publishes the AMA Code of Medical Ethics on line for anyone to read.

http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/2498.html

The code of ethics is an honors code practiced by most doctors.

What is confusing you is the legal issues of whether a doctor can testify against his patient if he discovers incriminating information. That is a totally different issue called Doctor-Patient Privilege.

Ethics and laws may differ from country to country, so check with your local medical association.

jacky
no patients consent is needed

bodmodangel
No, they dont need your permission. doctors can consult about a patient's care.

Some of these answers crack me up. Yes, they can do this and they do it all the time! Remember, though, that in the vast majority of cases, they don't necessarily pass on identifying info. They might say "white female, age 23, etc".

Also, we all sign documents when we visit a doc for the first time, and most of us probably don't read them completely. But I guarantee we give permission for all sorts of things.

yes, HIPPAA states that healthcare providers are allowed to speak with other healthcare providers.

yes a doctor can call another doctor about a patient without the consent or acknowledgement of the patient. needing a patient's consent is for if and when the doctor is going to perform a procedure on the patient, or if they want to disclose information to court and/or family.

I you are under 18 then your parent needs t give permission.

Sandee
Yes they can and without your permission. For instance, if your Doctor wanted the opinion of a specialist in Hospital then he would have a word before referring you.

doctors cannot talk about their pateints with other doctors without permission, this is due to patient doctor confidentuality and the fact that just because the other person is a doctor does not mean they dont know the pateint or the pateints familys etc.
