vicodin/hydrocodone 5mg, loratab/hydrocodone 7.5mg, 10 mg; darvacet/ultram; morphine; methadone; oxycontin/oxycodone; perkaset/percodone; ... these are the most common painkillers; the 2nd name given is the generic one and you can see how they almost all end in "codone" indicating an opiate derived from codeine

It depends on what you are looking for: what type of pain, duration, severity of pain. There are many types of meds for different types of pain. What may work for a headache may not work for joint pain, etc. You should check with a pharmacist or look it up on webmd to know what will work best. Also, if the pain is relieved by an OTC med, there is no need to turn to narcotic meds like Lortab and morphine as others have listed for you. Narcotics can be very addictive and dangerous if not used under the supervision of a doctor or pharmacist. AND, a doctor or pharmacist would be best able to tell you if a new medication might interact with something you may already be on.
If you would narrow your question to be more specific, you might get a more specific answer. What kind of pain? How old is the person? Do they have a low tolerance for medicines?
If you have asked for other reasons, a more narrow search still may be in order. For instance, are you afraid someone you know is abusing meds and you want to know what it is they are taking? If so, you can ask about specific meds even if you don't know the names. You can look them up by description: shape, color, size, letters or numbers printed on pill, etc.
