My son love taking fish oil. Our pediatrician isn't wild about him taking it, but she couldn't really say why...I don't think our doctors' office is very up on alternative strategies. He has no physical or developmental issues, but I figured that if it's good for adults, it's probably ok for kids. Any thoughts?

It is not necessarily good for adults either. Everyone seems to be jumping on this omega-3 fatty acid craze and thinks everything herbal or extracted from an animal in the form of a pill must be good for you. I'm not saying there aren't any health benefits, they have studies that show fish oil does help with your cardiovascular system but the problem is the studies aren't conclusive much higher than that of a placebo pill. Fish oil contains a lot of cholesterol and the fatty acid may not be needed if you eat something that has it.

Like any drug there are benefits and risks. If you think the benefit outweighs the risk then it is beneficial to take the drug. I seriously doubt your child is getting any benefit from fish oil as his cardiovascular system isn't even done growing along with the rest of his body at his age so I think the risk outweighs the benefit.

If you go to www.illnessfreeliving.com you will see the best fish oil. It is called Salmon oil plus. It not only keeps your heart healthy, but keeps your joints lubricated and helps to keep you healthy. The other products for children are great because they are made from real fruits and vegetables. They are called Vitasquares and Vitaguard. I know people who have children that haven't been sick since they started taking these. Personally, I take the adult products and haven't been sick in 3 years. Even though I have 6 chronic illnesses. Nani

It's fabulous. Providing it's good quality of course. Great for developing their eyes and their brain. There has been studies on it. You don't need to have something wrong to take something to stay healthy. Fish oil is omega 3's, which are also called essential fatty acids. Called this because they are ESSENTIAL to different things in the body. Most other vitamins can be made within the body from other things if you are low on intake, but omega 3's can't. It is important to take them regualary. Also recommend them to anyone you know that has ADD or ADHD

Yes... is veddy veddy ggooood for him. Fish oil is appropriate, just not in adult doses.Reat the Omega factor...fish oil may have a proofound effect on developmeny of innate intelligence. Also find brands that are purified....that is with decreased levels of PCB, Mercury etc. Pure fish oil, by the way remains liquid even in the freezer.

funny how Medics poo poo what they don't know.

Studies have shown that kids taking fish oils regularly tend to have better academic results than a control group.

I've read it's suppose to help ADD in children. From what I understand it IS very good, what you have to watch out for is the supplier you're getting it from.

Depends on your son's age. If he is under 5, you are basically experimenting with him, seeing whether fish oil may be detrimental while he is undergoing rapid growth. Young children do not metabolize things the same way adults do. I think that is dangerous to give a young child fish oil and other supplements, since nobody knows what effect it may have. If he is a teenager, it is likely harmless.

Fish oil is great since in this society our levels of consumption of Omega fatty acid 3 are low. You should take fish oil that is vacuum package and always have it in the refrigerator so it does not becomes rancid. Then the benefits are not null. You should also take primrose oil. Read more at www.mercola.com. Some of the benefits are increase brain action, healthier inmune system.

As far as I know fish oil is good for everyone including kids because the omega 3 is good for brain function.

Perhaps you should try a Yahoo search for "fish oil" + "health benefits" + children (OR kids) to further investigate your question.

Not everything that is good for adults is good for kids. For example skim milk and soy milk are good for adults but very bad for growing kids.
