Prevent Anemia

Anemia is a common but potentially serious illness. While some forms result from a genetic condition, the most common variety is caused by a lack of available iron in the diet. Women and athletes must be especially vigilant to prevent this condition, as prevention is easier than treatment.

Steps
  1. Determine your risk" by checking your risk factors. Risk factors include
    • A strenuous workout routine
    • A vegetarian diet (especially vegan)
    • Any other dieting
    • Inadequate vitamin C intake
    • Family history
    • Recent surgery
    • A serious injury
  2. Ask your doctor to test for anemia regularly if you are at risk.
  3. Eat a diet rich in iron and vitamin C. Good sources of available iron include:
    • Animal proteins (especially red meat)
    • Beans
    • Spinach
    • Dark chocolate
  4. Take an iron suppliment to make sure you're getting enough.
  5. Avoid excessive dieting or over-excercising, which can trigger symptoms in someone who is already at risk.
  6. Avoid donating blood. If you are anemic, you will be turned down anyway.
